DARPA designed the IP protocol to handle multiple routes in the event of a disaster or war. In the hands of competent engineers, IP is robust. Single point of failure is a neophyte move. If anyone finds a status update page for this outage, please post.

Got this response Unfortunately we do not have an estimated time yet, however Eastlink has advised us they are implementing a fix, but have not provided us a concrete time frame for how long it will be before all modems are back up.

The fact that we are hardly being given any information or update in what's going on is what has to be the most annoying part in all of this, not to mention everyone is getting a different answer it seems. Especially since some people work from home aswell. Not to mention how one of the last comments says Friday at the earliest it'll be back! That better not be true. I feel like a damn caveman, what do you expect me to do? Read a damn book? Hell no. Leave the house? And what hangout with all the crackheads outside? I'm dying bro someone's gotta fix this, I need the internet to distract me from my problems instead of forcing me to confront and heal them. Just throw me into the wildfires at this point.

Vianet needs to provide an internet status web page. Keeping customers in the dark never ends well. Having to call them to get updates is frustrating.

Vianet representative just told me that it could take till Friday at the earliest to reestablish the internet connections. Widespread damage caused by forest fires as km's of cable and wiring need replacement. Hang in there folks!!

It's not just Vianet cable Internet customers that are experiencing an outage. This issue is affecting all ISPs using Eastlink's infrastructure (i.e. NetSpectrum, TekSavvy, Netfox, Sunwire, etc...) Basically, the cable modems from these smaller ISPs aren't registering on Eastlink's network and thus remain offline. Not sure if it's a server / database issue at Eastlink's end?

Vianet seems to be down between Sudbury and Timmins, there are at least 3 forest fires between those points, maybe more depending on which way the cables are actually run. I'm not an expert, but it's something to consider. Especially since Vianet seems to play this close to their chest.
